Week 13

Week two of whatever we call this. It was a hard week, full of highs and lows.

On Sunday, I hung out on Zoom with my book club. It was definitely good.

On Monday, I worried.

On Tuesday, I made most of the day without looking at the news. That was great.

On Wednesday, I was so busy with work that the day passed by before I knew it, and we got take-out for dinner for the first time since all of this.

On Thursday, I experimented with not showering and wearing my workout clothes all day. This will not happen again, as long as I'm working from home. It was a bad day, and feeling unshowered  cast an extra heaviness on me. The hardest thing today was grieving in isolation, worrying in isolation.

On Friday, after finishing my work, I tried to learn some dance moves (thanks to a Barredio class on Facebook Live), gave up, and just turned up some music and danced my usual go-to moves. This was after crying myself into a sore throat, worrying about the sore throat, and then taking an ibuprofin.

On Saturday, I pruned back the roses and listened to The Library Book, the part where she talks about news of Chernobyl overshadowing news of the Los Angeles public library burning. The world has seemed to end many times.

Listening:

A couple songs I listened this week to with a different appreciation:

"[Nothing But] Flowers" by Talking Heads: "Once there were parking lots / now it's a peaceful oasis (you got it, you got it). This was a Pizza Hut/now it's all covered with daisies (you got it, you got it). I miss the honky tonks/ Dairy Queens and 7-11's (you got it, you got it). ...Don't leave me stranded here/I can't get used to this lifestyle."

"Every Night" by Paul McCartney: "Every night, I just want to go out, get out of my head..."

Reading:

I finished Nothing to See Here by Kevin Wilson on audiobook. It was a fun listen, and an interesting view of class, family and friendship mixed with magical realism.

I picked up Consider the Fork by Bee Wilson again, after taking a break. I'm finding that reading about the history of cooking is a perfect thing to read about at the end of the day. It's amazing how far we've come, and all the things we take for granted now in the kitchen.

Making:

Next week I will show you my completed Bojagi. It's almost there!! (See my previous post for a picture of where I was on Saturday - dog-hair-covered leggings included.)

Watching:

We are watching a lot. I downloaded a free trial of Broadway HD, which gave me access to watching a sorts of stage productions, like Hugh Jackman as Curley in Oklahoma, Kevin Kline in Noel Coward's Present Laughter, and Rhinoceros starring Gene Wilder and Zero Mostel. I'll probably cancel by the end of the week...but if I forget, it's only $8.99.

Frasier is still our dinnertime show.

I think we watched some other things but I can't remember what they were... We started the Tiger King like so many others, but it made me feel a little ill.

Recipes

We made our beloved BLT bowties, had flank steak on the grill, roast chicken, West African chicken and peanut soup, and black bean tacos, along with homemade bread and roasted banana ice cream. That said, it really was nice to get take-out from our old standby Bangkok Thai. Joel expertly handled the containers to prevent any potential germ transfer.
