Well, gosh. Where did that week go?
One realization I had this week, after putting on work pants for the first time, is that my waist is not what it was in mid-March.
A second realization I had this week, after looking at my phone's pedometer, is that I have been walking an average of 1,500 steps a day. I know it's not truly tracking all of my activity (including my morning barre/HIIT/bootcamp classes), but that's still a staggeringly low number of steps. I'm missing my daily campus walks.
Are the two connected?! Of course they are.
It doesn't help that Luna just can't walk that far anymore, so I don't have a walking buddy. So this week, starting Wednesday, I instituted a mid-afternoon solo neighborhood walk. I walked places I used to walk with Luna, but on sides of the road I usually avoid because of dogs and other reasons that upset Luna. It was a rediscovery of my own neighborhood, and I really enjoyed myself. It was especially nice to do it during my mid-afternoon slump when I'm more inclined to eat a cookie for a sugar rush. I'm hoping to keep it up.
The reason I put work pants on in the first place was because I went to campus this week for a presidential video shoot. We're doing as much preparatory communications with students as possible before they return this coming week, and as much as I read about the bad news about college campuses across the country, there's a spark of optimism for me that maybe our students will buck the trend of reckless partying and COVID spreading. Time will tell. It's tense. Say a prayer for us, will you?
In the meantime, most of the photos I took this week were of food I made. So let's start with that:
Recipes
I did a riff on enfrijolades (recipe inspiration from Bon Appetit) on Monday using big beans from Rancho Gordo for the sauce. I filled the tortillas with seasoned ground turkey and diced jalapenos, and topped the dish with cotija, fresh onion and cilantro.
I made another Bon Appetit recipe for a blackberry tahini yogurt cake which was strange and delicious.
And then there was the bucatini dish Joel made with fresh sage from the neighbors' yard and fresh cherry tomatoes from our garden.
And finally, pear sorbet with candied ginger.
Making
A light report this week: I continued on the sleeve for my sweater. I'll take pictures this week (maybe!).
Reading
I finished The Hate U Give on the same day I heard the news about Jacob Blake. I keep thinking about the children who are the witnesses to murders and violence. It is too much to bear, and yet I keep telling myself not to look away from these painful stories, to not leave it to them to seek justice. We all must do this work.
I began Florence Adler Swims Forever by Rachel Beanland and am enthralled. I love stories that let you try on all the characters' perspectives.
Watching
We watched the movie adaptation of The Hate U Give and I thought it was quite well done - great choices of actors for both Starr and Khalil. Plus Issa Rae, whom I love.
Listening
I'm catching up on news commentary on my walks by resuming The Daily from The New York Times. I feel like have things to talk about at the dinner table again.
