Summer journal: Week 1

The first dawn of summer brought this little guy.

East of Eden is my first official summer read.

My mom's old Olivetti found its way into my office and it's brightening up this little corner.

Part of my CSA haul. Hail, kale!

These days, you'll find me standing under linden trees and inhaling deeply. The aroma of these blossoms on a summer evening is divine. (If you look closely, you'll find Joel and Luna.)

Exactly a year ago, I was entrenched in Whitworth's latest brand work and was involved in a 2-day photo shoot. On Thursday, the fruits of that labor greeted me at the Alaska Airlines terminal. As the wise Mr. Rogers said, "It's such a good feeling, a very good feeling."

Arrived in Boise!

From a walk around my childhood neighborhood...

...giant, deep-dark hollyhocks...

...and milk thistle!

Sitting by the pool. Ah, it's good to be here!

Watched Gold Diggers of 1933 with my dad. This was apparently the first movie he and my mom saw together, and it was almost 30 years old then. I grew up with these faces and have a soft spot for any movie featuring the choreography and camera work of Busby Berkeley.

It's not a summer trip to Boise without heading to the market(s) downtown.
I got to go with my birthday-girl sister!

Me and my high school gal pals. The older I get, the more I realize how lucky I was to meet kindred spirits at such a tender age. I also love that our conversation during our breakfast get-together ranged from what we've been up to, to what would happen in the event of a nuclear disaster. These ladies are among the very best.

I had this realization many years ago, that if Tom Hanks worked at Whitworth, his email address would be thanks@whitworth.edu. I'm so glad someone is capitalizing on this. (And you can purchase it at Mixed Greens in downtown Boise.)

Also, another thing that Idahoans appreciate.

One of the reasons for my visit was to celebrate my brother Dave's 50th. Pictured here is my nephew, who looks appropriately stunned.

The cars lined up and down the street for Dave's party on the street where we grew up.

Back in Spokane, the weather got wild, then produced the most amazing sunset.

We got our cocktail on at Clover with Joel's brother and a colleague who were visiting Spokane for a conference.

Joel kept my plants alive while I was gone. I am grateful.

Grumpy welcoming committee

Roses from the garden to spruce up the mantle.

The view after an evening bike ride to Brain Freeze for ice cream.

And this one from the Monroe Street Bridge.

Beefing up my cold-dinner repertoire, I made a Vietnamese chicken and cabbage salad. Really good. I'll share the recipe soon.
