When I was a kid, I routinely started digging through my parents' cassette collection to find my dad's curated Christmas music tapes starting in October. Certain volumes were played more than others, but each one was thoughtfully recorded by my dad from my parents' varied record collection. I loved it because the vinyl crackle came through. The tapes featured a great variety, from the traditional carols to the feel-good cozy classics.
The music note doesn't fall far from the staff (sorry) as I've spent a lot of time in recent years separating the duds from the wonderful stuff in Christmas music. Like my dad, I'm easily annoyed by the sexed-up versions of "Baby, It's Cold Outside" and would be happy to never hear "Santa Baby" ever again, but there's a certain amount of kitsch I will always love. I also enjoy refreshing renditions of reverent hymns, as long as it's not any woman under the age of 40 singing "O Holy Night." I'm happy to create my own playlists of stuff that I not only can tolerate but that make me downright gleeful.
I made my first Christmas mix and gave it away to friends and family in 2009. I've since run out of physical copies, but here it is in all its glory for your various devices. I'll post my mix from 2011 next week and debut 2013's very soon. Enjoy:
