I came home on Thursday night to find the whole living room completely reconfigured. While I was at work, Joel eliminated this behemoth of a couch - brown, 1970s - and in doing so, made my year. For over three years, this couch had been the source of a classic couples' argument between us of form vs. function in home decorating. It was an extremely long thing, which made it suitable for naps. Which was why we kept it. And we kept it for our annual Super Bowl Party when we need a few extra seats. But the couch swallowed people up, sat low to the ground, and the zippers on the cushions were ripped, among other problems.
But now it's gone. When I walked in the door with my look of disbelief, he told me, "Happy birthday!" because yes, I did request a couch removal in lieu of gifts. For a split second, I almost missed it. Almost.
Now both his chair and mine sit in front of the front window. I'm sitting here now with The Brothers K and my freshly pressed coffee. This is absolutely lovely.
I'm a fan of giving Experiences rather than Stuff for birthdays and holidays. Sounds like the birthday couch-removal was a fine Experience! Lovely post. Oh, and the Brothers K punched my heart in the face the first time I read it. I'm due to revisit that book.
ReplyDeleteI am relishing every page of it! Everyone I know who's recommended it has read it more than once.
